A hernia occurs when there is a weakening in the wall of muscle that protects the internal organs around the abdominal area. This weakening causes a breach or split in the wall resulting in a part of the internals slipping through the opening producing a lump or swelling on the outside. This is often painful or can cause discomfort. The only method of treatment is through surgery known as hernioplasty.
