The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year!
When should you receive the vaccination?
Yearly flu vaccination should begin in September or as soon as the new strain is available (usually October or November in Thailand) and continue throughout the influenza season, into December, January, and beyond. This is because the timing and duration of influenza seasons vary! While influenza outbreaks can happen as early as October, most of the time influenza activity peaks in January or later.
Who should receive the vaccination?
In general anyone who wants to reduce their chances of catching seasonal flu. However, it is recommended that certain groups of people should get vaccinated each year. They are people who are at risk of having serious flu-related complications or people who live with or care for those at high risk for serious flu-related complications.
People who should receive a yearly flu vaccination are:
1. Children aged 6 months and over
2. Pregnant women
3. Aged 50 years or over
4. People suffering from chronic medical conditions
5. Health care workers Who should not be vaccinated?
1. People with a severe allergic reaction to chicken eggs
2. People who have had a severe reaction to the influenza vaccine in the past
3. People who have a moderate to severe illness which includes a fever (wait for a full recovery before getting vaccinated)
